Kristen and Brett have just started their honeymoon in Reykjavik, Iceland, and can’t wait to experience everything this fascinating, natural, and beautiful city has to offer. However, Kristen tends to attract murder investigations, and it looks like this will happen to her again. In Land of Ice (Nature Station Mystery) by Jannifer Powelson, Kristen and Brett hear a scream while visiting the city's main church. Then they find themselves quickly enmeshed in the sudden death of a fellow vacationer. They consider a few reasons why this could have happened. Did he have a heart attack or a stroke? Maybe he slipped on the icy pavement and hit his head. But Kristen has a bad feeling that there is something more sinister going on, given her experience with murder victims. What if he was murdered? She is determined to get involved in the investigation and find out what happened to him, even if her new husband is not too keen on her plan.

In Land of Ice (Nature Station Mystery) by Jannifer Powelson, the author tells a delightful murder mystery story of a husband-and-wife team investigating as amateur sleuths. The plot is well-paced, using beautiful descriptions of Icelandic locations as a backdrop for the ugliness of a murder investigation. Several interesting characters appear, each with their own secrets, adding to the suspense. I particularly enjoyed the two police investigators’ dry wit as they tried, without success, to keep Kristen and Brett out of the investigation. As is common, and enjoyable, with good murder mysteries, there are a few twists and a surprising conclusion.

"Reviewed By S. Mathur for Readers' Favorite

Rachel and Sammy’s Prairie Partner, with photographs and text by Jannifer Powelson, is a book to treasure. This field guide to the plants of the Midwestern prairie complements the author’s earlier Rachel Raccoon and Sammy Skunk picture book series for young children. It is intended for older children, but makes a wonderful introduction to native prairie, woodland edge, savanna, and wetland plants for readers of all ages. There are 270 species listed here, with beautiful photographs of each. For easy identification, there are sections on Grasses, Orange and Red, Purple and Pink, White and Cream, and Yellow and Gold blooms. Alongside photographs of each plant, there are details with the common and scientific names, bloom color, height, bloom dates, and fun facts about preferred habitat, scent, uses, etc.

Rachel and Sammy’s Prairie Partner by Jannifer Powelson does a wonderful job of communicating her love of the prairie and, at the same time, educating readers about the plants they will find there. It would make a good reference to take along on a nature walk or camping trip, or just to browse in a quiet hour. The photographs capture the simple beauty of the wild grasses and flowers. Powelson’s voice of experience, cautioning that there are always variations and exceptions in the natural world, will be helpful when encountering plants in their native habitat. This book would be a good tool for educators and parents, a handy reference guide, and a beautiful gift for readers and nature lovers of all ages. Highly recommended."
